Drawing 71: Fairfield and Seat Sandal, from Steel Fell
Direction of view: E
Notes: From the summit of Steel Fell, follow the fence north for c.600 yards, until it turns east. The trees are no longer there, and it isn’t easy to get the rocks looking right. A small section of the A591 inevitably appears at the bottom left of the photo.
This image also appears on page Steel Fell 6 in The Central Fells, on page 21 of Wainwright in Lakeland, on page 25 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer, and is the 19th photo in Fellwanderer. This photograph is in summer, whereas the sketch is under winter snow; and the tree is differently placed. The photo from which the sketch was done is in the County Archives at Kendal, reference WDAW/4/1/1/2/11: see below, noting how Wainwright has “enhanced” the trees in his sketch.
Comments: I first visited the scene of this sketch on 1st August 2015, on a walk with Anne Setright. She had just arrived from London, and we had three hours for an afternoon walk before checking in to our B&B at Elterwater Park, so Steel Fell was an ideal option. The day had started mainly cloudy, but by the time we reached the sketch location, it was basking in lovely sunshine (image 1). Image 2 shows the photograph in the County Archives, as referred to above © The Estate of A Wainwright.
