Drawing 67: The Stonethwaite Valley

Direction of view: S

Notes: The viewpoint is on the path from Stonethwaite to Dock Tarn, just where it emerges from the trees.  Wainwright seems to have taken his picture from slightly lower down the fellside than this, but that is now obscured by trees.  This will be best taken on a summer evening.

This view also appears in Lakeland Mountain Drawings (33), on page 37 of Fellwalking with a Camera, page 38 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer, and is the tenth photo in Ex-Fellwanderer.  The sketch and the photograph are very similar, though the former includes more interest in the sky.

Comments: I first found the location for this sketch on 30th November 2014, on a walk with Peter and Ruth Messenger, but didn’t take a photo, as it was looking straight into a low sun.  I took the picture for the first time on 23rd September 2015, on my way back from a wild camp in the hills (see Drawing 243 for an account of that experience).  The light was flat and hazy.  The picture shown here was taken on 3rd July 2019 – see Drawing 203 for an account of that day.
