Drawing 56: Bowfell from Great End

Direction of view: SE

Notes: I haven’t been able to identify the foreground rocks shown in the sketch, though they undoubtedly exist. The photograph from which the sketch was drawn is in the County Archives at Kendal, reference WDAW/4/1/1/2/9, and the rocks are identifiable in that picture.

This sketch does not appear in any other of Wainwright’s published works.

Comments: I took this shot on 5th November 2012 (see Drawing 360 for full account).  The evening sunlight on the fresh snow was gorgeous, and it made a lovely picture.  It was frustrating not to be able to find the precise rocks for the foreground, but soon I had to scamper down to get off the fell before nightfall.  But I was pleased to have visited 13 sketch viewpoints in a single day, though low sun and deep shadows meant that not all of them produced great photos.  I got back to Seathwaite, under a skyful of stars, at 6pm.
