Drawing 50: Boardale
Direction of view: ESE
Notes: This is a view of Martindale, not Boardale – a rare mistake by AW. The trees have grown up somewhat, so this will be best taken when there are no leaves on them. Parked cars can be a hazard for photographers seeking a timeless image.
This view appears on page 255 of Westmorland Heritage, and is the frontispiece of the Steel Knotts chapter in The Far Eastern Fells. In both of these publications, Wainwright mentions neither Boardale nor Martindale, but states that the stream in view is Howe Grain Beck (which, of course, is in Martindale).
Comments: I took this picture for the digital project on 13th May 2014 (see Drawing 225 for a description of that day). As I arrived at the viewpoint it was cloudy overhead, but patience was rewarded, and the picture I got was in full sunshine. Very little apart from tree growth has changed since AW drew this scene.
The photograph from which this sketch was drawn is in the County Archives at Kendal, reference WDAW/4/1/1/2.7. The sketch is remarkably accurate to the photo.
