Drawing 39: The North Western fells, from Keswick
Direction of view: WSW
Notes: The viewpoint is the field gate on the A591 opposite Lonsties, Keswick. Little has changed, though some buildings are visible through the trees, which have grown up somewhat.
This view forms the frontispiece to Wainwright in Lakeland, and also appears on page 85 of Ex-Fellwanderer and page 180 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer.
Comments: First taken on slide film in January 1978: see 38 above. This is image 1.
Having driven by this viewpoint without stopping countless times, I took the photo on 10th June 2015, when en route for the Newlands fells (see 108 for an account of that day). The foreground field is delightfully spangled with buttercups (image 2).
There was one problem that day. When I opened the back of the car to get out my camera, I found that I had with me everything that could possibly be required for a day on the fells – except for one item. A rucksack! With Keswick at my feet this defect was soon remedied; and I had the presence of mind to buy a sack that was different to the others I possessed (smaller, as it happens); and instead of just being necessary for one day that rucksack has given years of use when a full size pack wasn’t needed.
