Drawing 375: Grisedale Pass
Direction of view: NNW
Notes: The viewpoint can be found from the outflow of Grisedale Tarn. Follow the path towards DeepdaleHause, but soon leave it to climb the fellside diagonally right (above the path). The key point is matching up where Falcon Crag meets the background ridge.
Comments: I first took this picture on 28th December 2017, on a solo walk from Dunmail Raise. I had looked for it 12 days earlier on a walk with an old College friend (Ian Hall), but it never quite came right. On my own, there was quite a bit of manoeuvring around, but it was very satisfying to locate the foreground rocks! I then went on to sketch 221 of Grisedale Tarn, and returned to Dunmail Raise over Seat Sandal. A beautiful winter’s day, and the hills were busy.
This sketch is reproduced on page 88 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and page 110 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer (a smaller version). The scene appears on page 16 of Fellwalking with a Camera. The sketch is very true to this photograph, save that AW has slightly enhanced the prominence of Helvellyn on the right hand side.
