Drawing 35: The Buttermere Valley

Direction of view: NW

Notes: It is difficult to find any section of the Fleetwith Pike ridge that looks exactly like the foreground of the sketch, but two or three hundred yards down from the summit is a good approximation.

This view, which AW describes as “supremely beautiful” appears on page 142 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and on page Fleetwith Pike 3 in The Western Fells.

Comments: I took this photo on 24th July 2014, on a walk with Peter Watson.  We had been staying at Black Sail youth hostel for a couple of nights, and walked out to Gatesgarth via Moses Trod (see Drawing 388) and Fleetwith Pike.  The weather conditions were perfect, and this view looked as magnificent and as beautiful as Lakeland ever looks in summer.  We had our lunch break nearby, to enjoy the view for as long as possible.
