Drawing 336: Upper Eskdale
Direction of view: N
Notes: A short walk north from the os column provides an unobstructed view.
This view also appears on page 70 of Wainwright in Lakeland, page 101 of Fellwalking with a Camera, it is the 47th photo in Fellwanderer, and appears on page 96 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer (where the sketch and photograph appear together). In the bottom right of the sketch, Wainwright shows a raised plateau which doesn’t in fact appear in the photograph.
Comments: I took this picture on 23rd November 2016 – my sixth visit to the summit of Harter Fell. I was on my own, and wearing a brand new pair of Zamberlan boots (very comfortable, but not as grippy on damp rock as I would have liked). I visited Eskdale Needle (see 152) and then proceeded to Harter Fell for this sketch and 192. It was a rush to get to the top before the light faded, and in truth it would have been better a bit earlier, but the picture I got does some justice to this superb viewpoint.
