Drawing 324: Great Gable, from Haystacks

Direction of view: SSE

Notes: The viewpoint is the summit of Haystacks.  The iron post looks much smaller now, as a cairn has grown up around it.

Comments: I took this picture on 17th July 2017, a great day out in the hills.  See 201 for an account of the day.  On top of Haystacks, I met a group of walkers – two brothers and their partners – who were keen to hear the story of Wainwright’s ashes being scattered at Innominate Tarn, and I was pleased to tell them of Betty Wainwright’s visit together with Percy, Paul & Mike Duff, to perform this task.  It happened on 22nd March 1991, a beautiful calm, clear day (see 395 below, and page 46 of Encounters with Wainwrightpublished by The Wainwright Societyfor more detail on this occasion).

Surprisingly, this scene does not appear elsewhere in Wainwright’s published works.
