Drawing 318: The Stonethwaite Valley

Direction of view: WNW

Notes: The viewpoint is at grid reference NY279134 approximately, on the east side of the stone wall which is at the top of the steep slope down to the Stonethwaite Valley.  A small part of this wall can be seen in the sketch.  The viewpoint for Drawing 243 is close by.

The only other place in Wainwright’s published works where this scene appears is on page 40 of Fellwalking with a Camera.

Comments: I took this picture on 22nd September 2015, on my way to a wild camp in the hills (see 243 for an account).  This sketch is very deceptive, being much further away from Stonethwaite hamlet than might be thought.  But the scene depicted by Wainwright has changed very little.
