Drawing 304: Northwest from High Spy

Direction of view: NW

Notes: The viewpoint is the summit of High Spy. As there is no foreground in the sketch, it is an easy one to get.  Note that the fell on the right skyline is Sand Hill (somewhat exaggerated in proportions), not Grisedale Pike as stated by Wainwright in his notes to this sketch.

This view also appears as Lakeland Mountain Drawing 176, and on page 179 of Fellwalking with a Camera.  Neither sketch really presents this as an attractive scene: it is a rather austere landscape of uncompromising slopes, as AW notes in Fellwalking with a Camera.

Comments: I took this picture on slide film on 16th February 1992, during a felltop traverse from Honister to Hawse End with Andrew Amos and Peter Messenger.  It was a cold and bright day, with a sprinkling of new snow on the fells, and in the course of the walk we bagged three other sketches: 268, 159 and 101.

I took this photo for the digital project on 31st May 2014 (see Drawing 136 for an account of this day).   It was mid-afternoon, and quite hazy, so a return visit was needed.  On 5th November 2017 it was clearer, but shadows rather intrude.  A summer morning would be best.
