Drawing 299: Nethermost Pike

Direction of view: W

Notes: The viewpoint is on the track up Grisedale; the wall corner shown in the sketch is unmistakeable.  A pine tree which was probably the one drawn by AW is now (2014) lying dead on the ground.  The viewpoint for sketch 262 is just 100 yards back down the track.

This scene does not appear elsewhere in Wainwright’s published works.

Comments: I took this photo on slide film on 24th January 1981, along with its companion, sketch 262.  Peter Messenger and I parked in Grisedale (still possible then) among cars gathered for a fox hunt (ditto) and after getting these sketches continued to tackle Nethermost Pike via its east ridge.  We continued to Dollywaggon Pike, then down the Tongue to Ruthwaite Lodge.

I took this picture on digital on 24th April 2014.  See Drawing 262 for an account of that day.
