Drawing 294: Skiddaw and Catbells

Direction of view: NNE

Notes: This sketch is not from the ridge route from Catbells to Maiden Moor, as might be imagined, but from considerably lower down the fellside, in Yewthwaite Comb. Wainwright states that “the viewpoint is High Crags, Maiden Moor”. It needs to be taken in the afternoon.

Comments: I had planned to get this sketch on 31st May 2014 (see Drawing 136 for an account of that day), but the detour to it would have added too much to an already long day, so I left it for another time.

That didn’t happen until 5th November 2017, when I was out on the fells on my own; one of my main objectives being to get this sketch (and also number 21).  It was a splendid clear autumn day, and I climbed Maiden Moor and High Spy, before returning to look for the viewpoint of this sketch.

This scene does not appear elsewhere in Wainwright’s published works.
