Drawing 289: The Buttermere fells, from Mellbreak
Direction of view: SSE
Notes: From the slightly lower of the two cairns on the north top of Mellbreak.
This view also appears as Lakeland Mountain Drawing 189, on page Mellbreak 8 in The Western Fells, on page 150 of Fellwalking with a Camera, and it is the 19th photograph in Ex-Fellwanderer. On page 195 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer, the photo and sketch appear together for comparison, showing that Wainwright invented the two sheep on the right of the sketch. In the mountain drawing, they have disappeared again!
Comments: I took this photo on 10th October 2016. It was a beautiful autumn day, and I set out from Loweswater with the aim of getting seven sketches: 167, 186, 200, 215, 218, 235 and this one. Visibility was excellent, with views across the Solway Firth and well into Scotland (over many intervening wind turbines). Coupled with a return along the Crummock Water lakeside path, this made for an excellent walk, and I was treated to a dramatic finish, as a brilliant rainbow spanned the summits of Whiteside and Grasmoor.
