Drawing 277: Stonethwaite

Direction of view: SE

Notes: This scene is easy to find and has changed very little, though trees have grown up to obscure a clear view of the hotel.  Likely to be best outside the winter months, when the sun hardly climbs over the surrounding fells.

Surprisingly, the only other place in Wainwright’s published works where this view appears is on page 24 of A Coast to Coast Walk.  The photograph from which this sketch was drawn is in the County Archives at Kendal, reference WDAW/4/1/1/2/29: a small square photograph, with no sheep, shepherd or dog.

Comments: I first took this picture (image 1) on slide film in late August / early September 1978, though I have no note of the precise date or circumstances: see 275 above. Similarly with regard to image 2, which was taken in August 1981.

I took this picture for the digital project on 7th April 2015 – see 195 for an account.  The picture below was taken on my return from the fells, late afternoon: image 3.
