Drawing 261: Tilberthwaite
Direction of view: NNE
Notes: The viewpoint is on the path up the south side of Tilberthwaite Ghyll.
The only other appearance of this sketch in Wainwright’s published works is in A Furness Sketchbook, sketch 18. Unusually for the Furness Sketchbooks, this is a reprint of the same sketch.
Comments: I took this photo on slide film on 5th April 1986. Snow lay on the tops; I had intended to tackle the Coniston fells from Tilberthwaite, but got to the start of my intended walk only to discover that I had left my boots at home in Darlington! I took this picture and 282 before moving on to White Moss for a wander around Grasmere and Rydal.
I took the picture for the digital project on 17th April 2017. There was very little sunshine around, so I didn’t take the picture in the morning, but went on to climb Wetherlam and descend the Lad Stones ridge to Coppermines Valley for sketch 265. As I returned to Tilberthwaite, a patch of sunlight was visible over Little Langdale and, with patience, it drifted onto the foreground.
