Drawing 259: Castle Crag, Borrowdale

Direction of view: NNE

Notes: Can be taken from noon onwards.  The viewpoint is near the top of the path to Castle Crag from the gap between Castle Crag and Goat Crag (lower down than the viewpoint for 184).  The large rock just in front of the scree can be identified.

Comments: I took this picture (image 1) on slide film on 12th September 1981.  I was with Peter Messenger, and my diary records “A very quick up and down from Rosthwaite; the whole walk took less than an hour.  The object was securing some photographs on and around the summit, and this was achieved just before cloud swept across the sun”.  The other pictures taken that day were 184 and 300.

Taken on digital on 8th April 2015 (image 2).  See 184 for an account of that day, which included sketches 228, 387, 275, 184, 300, 190, 57, 341 and 143 as well as this one.

This view also appears on page 186 of Fellwalking with a Camera. This sketch is faithful to that photo, even down to the dead tree in the foreground.  That is long gone now, but the two pines in the centre of the picture survive.
