Drawing 257: The head of Wastwater

Direction of view: NE

Notes: Taken from close to the Greendale road junction at grid reference NY152054.  Sketch 278 is from the same place.  Despite floods and downpours in the intervening years, the foreground remains very similar to that drawn by Wainwright.

Surprisingly, this image does not appear elsewhere in Wainwright’s published works.

Comments: I first took this picture (image 1) on 4th August 1979, during a solo youth hostelling trip around the western Lake District.

I took image 2 for this digital project on 24th May 2016.  Anne Setright and I were staying at Lane End Cottage in Boot, Eskdale; I was recovering from a broken ankle and Anne from recently cracked ribs.  We were unable to do any fellwalking, so a day getting photographs in Wasdale was a good objective.  This was the first one we tracked down; it was in shadow when we arrived, but sun appeared on the foreground before long, and allowed us to take this picture and 278 in good conditions.  Others taken that day were 82, 85, and 337.
