Drawing 255: The Coniston Fells, from Lingmoor Fell
Direction of view: SSW
Notes: The viewpoint is beside the path leading up the fellside from Bleatarn House, near the top of the gully, but before reaching the viewpoints for sketches 1 and 24.
This view also appears on page 57 of Fellwalking with a Camera, page 218 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and is drawing number 6 in A Furness Sketchbook. All of these have a light covering of snow; the Furness sketch, with its cumulus clouds, looks a jollier scene than the others.
Comments: I had not previously found the location for this sketch, but did so together with David Johnson on 27th February 2015. David is the editor of The Wainwright Society magazine “Footsteps”, and a real stalwart of the Society’s “Sketchbook Project”; he greatly enjoys the challenge of finding tricky sketch locations. The foreground rocks don’t exist, but we did locate the three hummocks shown in the sketch, making it certain that we had got the right spot. Unfortunately the weather was dull, with Swirl How and Great Carrs in mist. We continued to Lingmoor Fell, and got sketch 349 from Side Pike on the way back down.
I visited again on 22nd October 2018. A clear, sunny morning had clouded over very quickly, and when I reached the viewpoint the picture was no better than I had obtained previously. But I waited around, and patience paid off, as cloud cleared from the fell tops and shafts of sunlight got through, whilst the autumn colour of the bracken was very vivid. Having got this picture I went on to Elterwater and to Grasmere: see Drawings 17 and 320.
