Drawing 251: Matson Ground, Windermere

Direction of view: E

Notes: The topiary on the left has changed, and the flower border leading to the topiary on the right has been removed, otherwise this scene remains as sketched by AW.

The only other appearance of this sketch in Wainwright’s published works is on page 44 of Westmorland Heritage.

Comments: I first took this picture on slide film on 4th May 1981 with Peter Messenger, when we got four sketches, including this one, before exploring the Little Langdale quarries and ascending Wetherlam.  It was a day of cold winds, with cloudy and sunny intervals.

My digital picture was taken when Matson Ground gardens were open under the NGS scheme on Sunday 20 May 2012, and this was my first visit since 1981.  I showed AW’s sketch to the owner, who had not previously seen it.  He identified the changes mentioned above, but pointed out that the drawing accurately shows a ramp (in the centre of the picture) which was used by his grandfather, when confined to a wheelchair.  Later the wall here subsided and had to be replaced, when steps were built in place of the ramp.
