Drawing 242: Pillar from Great Gable

Direction of view: WNW

Notes: The viewpoint is the top of the path down to Beck Head.  As with all pictures which include Ennerdale, much has changed in recent years.

This view is Lakeland Mountain Drawing 91, and it is on page 112 of Fellwalking with a Camera, page 55 of Fellwanderer, page 133 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer (a reduced – size version of the same sketch), page iv of A Coast to Coast Walk, and page 97 of Wainwright in Lakeland.  The mountain drawing is closer to portrait format than landscape, and shows much less of Ennerdale, but is from almost exactly the same viewpoint as this sketch.

Comments: I first took this photo on slide film on 26th May 1992, on a walk with Peter Messenger: see Drawing 264.

I took the picture for the digital project on 29th October 2017 – see 340 for an account of that day.  It was an exhausting climb up from Beck Head; near the top there are two paths, but neither quite looks like the path and cairns in the bottom right corner of the sketch.
