Drawing 24: Langdale Pikes from Lingmoor Fell
Direction of view: NNW
Notes: Foreground shadows will be experienced in winter – as indeed appears from Wainwright’s drawing. The location is close to Sketch 1, but from the right bank of the gully, and close to the stone wall. On page Lingmoor Fell 5 in The Southern Fells, AW describes it as a perfect view of the Langdale Pikes, and his ascent diagram includes the note: “cameras out!”.
Wainwright’s love of this view is attested to by its appearance in other works: Lakeland Mountain Drawings (29), Wainwright in Lakeland page 239, Westmorland Heritage page 219, Memoirs of a Fellwanderer page 50, Fellwanderer the 9th photo and Fellwalking with a Camera page 23. The Lakeland Mountain Drawing (which also appears on the dustjacket of Volume 1) is, as usual, a new drawing, though very similar in content to the sketch. Two sheep feature in the foreground of the sketch and the drawing; but two birds in the sky of the sketch have flown away from the drawing!
Comments: see Drawing 1. The picture below was taken on 6th February 2012.
