Drawing 226: Wastwater

Direction of view: S

Notes: The viewpoint is a wall stile adjacent to Netherbeck Bridge.  Best taken late afternoon, but before the sunlight leaves the foreground. This popular view appears as Lakeland Mountain Drawing 356; and it is on page 26 of Fellwanderer, page 68 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer, page 54 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and page Illgill Head 2 in The Southern Fells.  All but the first and the last of these are reprints from the same original sketch.  The mountain drawing is a different drawing of exactly the same view and, to my eye, lacks the finesse of the original.

Comments: I first took this picture during a solo youth hostelling trip around the western Lake District in 1979.  Specifically, this picture was taken on a day walk from Wastwater youth hostel on 4th August 1979.  After ascending Buckbarrow, Seatallan and Middle Fell (drawing 249) there was “a race down the valley – and rewarding photography right up to Wasdale Head”.  This included drawings 278, 257, 82, 58, 33, 85, 298, 285, 134, 337, 368 and this one.  Thirteen sketches for the day!

I took the picture for the digital project on 9th September 2017, and in sharp contrast to the above experience, this was at the end of a week’s holiday in Lakeland with Anne Setright, in which we hoped to bag a dozen sketches, but due to very poor weather, secured only this one.  We got down to Netherbeck Bridge after a walk to Caw Fell and Haycock, and the light was excellent, so we took the picture on Anne’s compact camera.  By the time we had walked down the road to the car and returned with my camera, the sun had sunk behind the hills and the foreground was in shadow, spoiling the shot.
