Drawing 216: The Coniston fells, from Gummer’s How

Direction of view: NW

Notes: The location is unmistakeable, although the ordnance survey column was showing signs of damage (2013).

This view appears on page 101 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and on page 47 of The Outlying Fells.

The photograph from which this sketch was drawn is in the County Archives at Kendal, reference WDAW/4/1/1/2/26.  The sketch corresponds very closely to this photograph, even including the initials inscribed into the cement on the Ordnance Survey column.

Comments: I first took this picture on 29th November 1980, on a day out with Peter Messenger.  We made two ascents, as Peter left his Wainwright guidebook on the summit, and we returned to retrieve it.  It was a clear sunny day, with the ground frozen hard.  Other drawings taken on the day were 266, 185, 363 and 358.

I took the photograph for the digital project on 26th August 2013  – see 185 for details. Although many people were on the hill, there was no-one by the os column to “spoil” the picture!
