Drawing 212: Little Langdale
Direction of view: WSW
Notes: From the lane leading from the Wrynose Pass road to Slater’s Bridge. The nearest parking is by a terrace of houses, 600m east.
This view is the title page of the Wetherlam chapter in The Southern Fells. It also appears as Lakeland Mountain Drawing 334, on page 217 of Westmorland Heritage, page 124 of Wainwright in Lakeland, sketch 4 in A Furness Sketchbook, and on page 58 of Fellwalking with a Camera. The Furness sketch is a different drawing of exactly the same scene; the mountain drawing puts Wetherlam centre stage.
Comments: I first took this picture on slide film on 29th June 1977: see 197.
My next picture, also on slide film, was taken on 2nd May 1981 – “a marvellous day of sun, with cumulus clouds adding character to the sky”. Peter Messenger and I were bound for a walk from Wrynose Pass, over Crinkle Crags and Bowfell, when we also got drawings 227, 369, 153, 329, 95, 314, 247 and 392. See 95 for more information on the day.
My picture for the digital project was taken on 5th June 2016, the first of four pictures in Little and Great Langdale during the period when my mobility was still restricted following having broken my ankle. I used my tripod and a Lee graduated filter.
