Drawing 210: The Scafell group, from Whiteless Pike

Direction of view: SSE by S

Notes: This sketch has no foreground at all, and the scene is unchanged from AW’s version.  This view appears on page 161 of Fellwalking with a Camera, page 72 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer (again, the sketch and photo appear together), page 81 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and it is the 33rd photo in Fellwanderer.

Comments: First taken on 13th July 2014, on a walk with Peter Messenger.  See drawing 191 for details.

I took the picture again, in better conditions, on 22nd June 2018, a gloriously sunny day, though there was a cold wind on the tops.

In The North Western Fells, AW writes that “Whiteless Pike has a great advantage as a viewpoint…. a prospect both wide and deep, a view of valleys as well as of mountains.  The Scafell mass is most excellently displayed, and is nowhere better seen than from this northern side of Buttermere…. the whole rich picture in this direction is crowded with lovely detail”.
