Drawing 196: The cairn on Latterbarrow
Direction of view: NW
Notes: This sketch also appears in The Outlying Fells, page 87. Only with a magnifying glass could I be sure that this is a different drawing, not a re-use of the original sketch.
Comments: I first took this picture on slide film in the autumn of 1991, probably on 3rd November, on a day which was concentrated on photography rather than walking. Other sketches probably taken on the same day were 86, 310, 219, 160, 250, and 307, and almost certainly this was a day with Peter Messenger, looking for autumn colours.
I first visited this sketch for the digital project on 14 April 2012, on a walk to Hawkshead, Latterbarrow, Near Sawrey and Esthwaite Water. There were quite a few people around, including children, but I soon got a photo without any of them in. I had lunch on the summit waiting for the sun to come out, but it never did. The all round views from this point are superb.
A better photograph was taken on 1st July 2018, on a Sunday morning trip to get three drawings: 335, this one, and 295. All were taken with my Sony Alpha 7 camera and a tripod. I got to the top about 10am, and two other walkers there soon left, so I had the place to myself. An amazing spell of good weather continued; very hot and sunny, but with no haze, due to the dry air.
