Drawing 186: Grasmoor and Rannerdale

Direction of view: NNE

Notes: Without any foreground to the sketch, the precise location of Wainwright’s viewpoint is impossible to determine.  However, the general area can be reached from Scale Force.  From the foot of the waterfall, take the path climbing by the south side of the ravine.  At the top of the steep section, take a narrow path climbing left (indistinct at the start), which ascends quite some distance.  Wainwright probably took his photo (and that for sketch 215) when exploring the route shown on Red Pike (B) page 7: this takes one into the same territory.

This view appears in Lakeland Mountain Drawings (482), on page 72 of Wainwright in Lakeland, page 160 of Fellwalking with a Camera, page 135 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer (where the photograph and sketch appear together for comparison), and it is the sixth photograph in Fellwanderer.  The mountain drawing has some rocks in the foreground (instead of heather).  Generally it is quite roughly executed, and not in the style that people would recognise as typical of Wainwright.

Comments: I took this picture on 10th October 2016 (see 289 for an account of that day). I spent some time exploring alternative viewpoints and different lighting and cloud shadows.
