Drawing 181: Pike o’ Blisco
Direction of view: SE
Notes: This will be best on a summer evening. The viewpoint is not on The Band, but is from the path beside Hell Gill, on the true right bank.
This view also appears on page 60 of Fellwalking with a Camera, and page 201 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer. Compared to the photo, Wainwright has introduced some sheep into the left foreground, and (unusually) the sky in the sketch looks very similar to that in the photo.
Comments: I first took this picture on 8th January 2018, whilst descending from Three Tarns after a traverse of the Crinkle Crags ridge (see 369 for an account of that day). As I discovered, this is totally the wrong time of the year to see this view to advantage! It is also the wrong place from which to take the picture.
I discovered the right place on 29th October 2018 (see 153). Descending from the Climbers’ Traverse towards The Band, I noticed that the rocks of Brown How lined up under the summit as they do in the sketch. Logic suggested that if I walked straight towards the fell from that point, I would find the location of the sketch; and so it proved. Very satisfying. I availed myself of a bit of foreground interest, though AW does not. It was about 3.15pm, and the clocks had changed, so there was no chance of more sun on the slopes of the fell.
