Drawing 175: Ennerdale Water

Direction of view: SE

Notes: The viewpoint is approximately one third of a mile along the Ennerdale road from Bowness Knott car park.  Trees have grown up along the lake shore at the critical point, so the view may be better taken when they are bare.  The forest road is also larger and wider than shown in the sketch, making it impossible to replicate exactly the scene as drawn by AW.  In the late 1970s, it was still much as AW saw it, as appears from the photo by Peter Messenger.

This view also appears as the very last of the 500 Lakeland Mountain Drawings, on page 115 of Fellwalking with a Camera, page 197 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer, page 232 of Wainwright in Lakeland, page 13 of A Coast to Coast Walk, and it is the 49th photo in Fellwanderer.  Compared to the photograph, Wainwright has made the fells look much closer and more imposing; this is very obvious in Memoirs, where the two are shown together.  The mountain drawing has a foreground of grass and bushes instead of the valley track.

Comments: I took the photo on digital on 9th September 2015, at the start of a walk in to Black Sail Youth Hostel with Anne Setright.  Drawings 137 and 220 were taken on the same day.
