Drawing 169: The head of Borrowdale

Direction of view: NNE

Notes: The viewpoint is looking back down the path from Stockley Bridge to Sty Head.  The scene is little changed from AW’s sketch, though the path looks less eroded now, and more like the pony track it once was.  In winter, the valley is in almost permanent shadow.

This view appears on page 127 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and page 73 of Fellwalking with a Camera.  The sketch is a remarkably accurate representation of this photo, except that there are two walkers in the sketch – though you have to look carefully to see them!

Comments: I first took this picture on slide film on 13th January 1991.  Peter Messenger and I were bound for a walk up Scafell Pike in full winter conditions (see  drawing 22), and this was the second of seven drawings bagged that day.

The 2012 photo was the first of 13 drawings bagged on 5th November 2012 (see 360 for a full account of that day).
