Drawing 162: Long Side and Ullock Pike

Direction of view: WNW

Notes: From the path between Long Side col and Carl Side col. The pattern of light and shade shown in the drawing is best around the middle of the day in Spring and Autumn.

This view appears on page 193 of Fellwalking with a Camera, page 116 of Memoirs of a Fellwanderer (where it appears alongside the photo, for comparison), and is the thirteenth photo in Fellwanderer.  A very similar view is Lakeland Mountain Drawing 164, but that is from a slightly higher viewpoint, and with a foreground of shaly rocks.

Comments: I took this picture on 2nd April 2017.  Combining looking for sketches with my project to do “direct ascents” of all the 214 fells (ie reaching the summit direct, as opposed to over the summit of another fell), I made a painfully steep slog up Long Side from the forest, and then continued to the location of this sketch.  I had planned to have lunch at the viewpoint, to give plenty of time for the light to be right, but actually it was excellent at the very moment I arrived there.  The best picture was taken using a Lee filter to darken the bright sky slightly.
