Drawing 138: The Ill Bell range

Direction of view: S

Notes: Wainwright’s view sign is incorrectly placed: this picture is taken from much nearer to Thornthwaite Crag than Mardale Ill Bell.  Grid reference for the viewpoint: NY437098.  Walking towards Ill Bell on the path above Hall Cove, when the path turns sharp right, continue ahead a few paces to find the rocks – which are less impressive in reality than in the sketch.

This view appears in Lakeland Mountain Drawings (108), and is on page 180 of Westmorland Heritage and page 107 of Wainwright in Lakeland.  The mountain drawing includes part of Kentmere Reservoir, which the sketch does not.  This is interesting: the photograph from which this sketch was drawn is in the County Archives at Kendal, reference WDAW/4/1/1/2/17, and shows that part of Kentmere Reservoir “should” be in this sketch: see image 1. The inky smudge is on the original photograph. © The Estate of A Wainwright.

Comments: It was not until 6th May 2018 that I set out specifically to get this picture – a beautiful Sunday on a bank holiday weekend.  I reached the viewpoint about 11.30; earlier in the morning would have been better. Looking down the valley, Kentmere reservoir was almost dry, although Haweswater was full.  In deference to Wainwright, I did the best I could to exclude the reservoir from my photograph!  After getting my picture (image 2), I went on to Thornthwaite Crag (my 21st ascent!) and High Street.
