Drawing 136: Hindscarth and Robinson
Direction of view: SW
Notes: The viewpoint is the summit of Catbells. The scene is unchanged; the field boundaries etc remain as drawn by Wainwright. This view appears on page Catbells 10 in The North Western Fells, and is similar to Lakeland Mountain Drawing 68 (where the right hand part of the view shown in the sketch is omitted).
Comments: I took this picture (image 1) on slide film on 22nd March 1981, on a Sunday afternoon walk with Peter Messenger. In sunny conditions we photographed drawing 101, then climbed Catbells, when we took this picture. The weather clouded over as we continued over Maiden Moor and High Spy, so there were no more sketches taken.
Image 2 was taken for the digital project on 31st May 2014, on a round of the Newlands fells also with Peter Messenger. The walk we did was part of the “Wainwright Memorial Walk”, which follows the route of one of AW’s early tours of the Lake District on foot. Starting from Portinscale, this was the first sketch we reached. It was a fine day, if a bit hazy, and the summit of Catbells was thronging with people – it was hard to find room to sit down for lunch! We went on to “bag” drawings 304, 159, 230, 268 and 390, finishing the walk at Newlands Pass.
