Drawing 120: The head of Ullswater

Direction of view: SSE

Notes: The viewpoint is on the path from Dockray to Brown Hills, and relatively obvious as the features of the scene come into line.  Wainwright gives the viewpoint as Watermillock Common.

The only other place in Wainwright’s published works where this scene appears is page 337 of Westmorland Heritage – with the left hand side slightly trimmed.  It is a drawing full of detail, which would have required intense concentration to execute convincingly.  The balance of light and shade is beautifully handled, too.

Comments: I took this picture on a walk with Peter Messenger on 6th October 2012 (see drawing 18).  A beautiful view, although much of the valley was in shadow at the time.
