Drawing 119: Burtness Combe, Buttermere

Direction of view: W

Notes: The square shaped rock in the combe helps identify the viewpoint.  The combe only gets full sunlight on summer mornings.

This scene appears in Lakeland Mountain Drawings (80) – where two walkers are included – on page 115 of Wainwright in Lakeland, and on page High Stile 9 in The Western Fells.

Comments: I took this picture on 6th October 2017, on a solo walk aimed at getting outstanding sketches in the High Stile range.  Unfortunately, high cloud spread in sooner than forecast, so the photos were increasingly in flat light.  But Burtness Combe is a very grand place, and the waterfalls on the stream were lovely, after much recent rain.

After this picture, a steep slog led to the north east ridge of High Stile, and drawings 315 and 246 on the summit.  After my lunch break, I continued to High Crag for drawing 272, before returning along that fine ridge, bypassing High Stile on the Ennerdale side, and continuing to Red Pike.  On the way down, I looked out for drawing 317, without success.
